Owner Assisted Dynamic Engine/Prop Balancing
Form
Unbalanced vibrations caused by engine
operations can reduce the lifespan of engine, propeller, airframe and avionic
components. Dynamically balancing the engine and prop combination (as a whole)
will improve the lifespan of the components mentioned above. It will also
reduce aircrew fatigue and increase comfort.
Dynamic balancing of the engine and prop combination is similar to balancing
your automobile rims and tires. Once the heavy spot has been determined, an
appropriate amount of weight is placed on the opposite side. On an aircraft,
that weight can be placed on your fly wheel. The fly wheel has provisions for
weight installation every 30 degrees. The appropriate amount of weight (in the
form of AN hardware) will be placed as close as possible to 180 degrees from the
unbalanced force.
Instrumentation will be placed on your aircraft which will measure your engine
RPMs, the amplitude and phase angle of the unbalance force. Multiple engine
runs will be required in order to reduce the unbalance force to an acceptable
level. Industry standard is 0.20 IPS or less.
Definition of responsibilities for owner
assisted dynamic balancing:
Aircraft Owner:
1. Turn Mags OFF!
2. Remove the
engine cowlings and the plenum (if installed).
3. Approve instrumentation installation and counter-balance weight
installation once the
appropriate weight has been
determined.
4. Ensure counter weight will not interfere with the starter, alternator,
alternator belt, cowling
or anything else in that
vicinity.
5. Torque the AN hardware on the fly wheel and engine case once the dynamic
balancing process
has been completed.
6. Comply with chapter 3 of AC 20-37(a) and FAR 43.13.
7. Re-install engine cowlings and plenum.
Alvarez Aviation:
1. Safely and securely install
instrumentation and associated wiring.
2. Perform
engine monitoring runs.
3. Determine appropriate counter-balance weight.
4. Remove instrumentation.
5 Provide the required information in order for the aircraft owner to
populate aircraft logs.
I _________________________(print name)
have read, understand and agree with the information provided. I understand
that it is my responsibility to check and maintain the AN hardware installed.
Neither Alvarez Aviation nor any family members will be held responsible for any
failure, damage or accident that may occur in the future.
